When an online store is available in the servers, the back-office software takes over as the online store administrator. It is the brain behind the 'Shopping Cart System' whose engine offers and sells the items to people visiting the merchant's website. It emulates a virtual store, namely an online store system: Analogous to the American English term 'shopping cart', and the British English term 'shopping basket'.

This program runs from designated Web servers. It is the checkout engine of our E-Commerce system. It allows online shoppers to add items to the cart. Upon checkout, it calculates the amount to be paid by totalizing the purchased items, the shipping and handling fees, the taxes, and coupons or redemptions when applicable.

The program finally processes the payment electronically by credit card, Paypal, or Google Checkout. Then stores the information in the merchant's database and sends the order via email to both the merchant and the buyer.On the other hand, images, order customization through options selection, quantity entry boxes, and 'Add to Cart' buttons are secondary within the HTML code.
